McConnells Mill State Park: Nature’s Hidden Gem in Pennsylvania
We try to visit this park once a year , and I am always in awe of this beautiful place! If you’re looking for a perfect combination of history and natural beauty, this park delivers on all fronts.
We usually start our adventure at the upper parking area, which has limited parking so it can fill up fast. From there, you head down a long stair-stepped path to follow the trail along Slippery Rock Creek - perfectly named as some parts of the path require careful footing over the rocky terrain. The rushing sound of the water accompanied us the entire way, creating the perfect soundtrack for our hike.
The historic covered bridge is a great place to take a break, built in 1874, this red wooden bridge sits perfectly framed by the lush greenery of the gorge. We took some time here to snap photos and watch kayakers navigate the whitewater below.
Continuing past the covered bridge, the trail got a bit more challenging with some rock scrambling required, but the views of the creek cutting through the steep gorge walls made every step worth it. The clear water rushing over massive boulders created countless mini-waterfalls along our route.
We continued downstream to the lower bridge, crossed over, and then hiked back along the opposite side of the creek. This return path offered completely different perspectives of the gorge and creek, making it feel like an entirely new hike.
We then make a visit to the old grist mill which is definitely the highlight of the trip. This 1852 water-powered mill has been beautifully preserved, and we spent some time exploring the interior with its original milling equipment still intact. There is usually a park volunteer inside to give tours or relay fascinating stories about how the mill operated and its importance to local farmers back in the day.
The moderately difficult trail loop took us about 3 hours with plenty of stops for photos and water breaks. I’d recommend wearing sturdy hiking boots with good rubber sole for traction on the rocks as the trail can be slippery, especially after rain.
McConnells Mill is truly one of Pennsylvania’s natural treasures - the combination of dramatic geology, flowing water, and historical structures makes for an unforgettable outdoor experience. If you haven’t visited yet, add it to your PA bucket list immediately!
