Back in May 2016, we took the Bald Knob excursion on the Cass Scenic Railroad in West Virginia, and it’s still one of the more memorable experiences from our travels.
The highlight was the sheer power of that steam engine as it climbed the mountain. You can feel it working hard on those grades—the sound is incredible. There’s something about a steam locomotive that just doesn’t translate through video. You have to be there.
One tip: don’t wear white or anything you care about. My wife learned the hard way that coal soot drifts back onto the cars, and it will find your clothes. Dress accordingly and you’ll enjoy it a lot more.
We stayed at Seneca Shadows Campground, which worked out well as a base for exploring the area.
If you’re anywhere near Pocahontas County and have even a passing interest in railroad history, it’s worth the trip.
