We just added the new Hughes Autoformers Watchdog Power Center to our lineup, and if you’ve been running one of the older Hughes voltage boosters, it’s worth knowing what changed.
The short version: the old autoformers did one thing: boost low campground voltage. The new Power Center does that plus a lot more, in a single unit.
What’s new compared to the old Hughes voltage boosters:
-
Built-in surge protection - the old units had none. The Power Center adds advanced surge/spike protection so you’re covered on both ends.
-
Replaceable surge module - if a surge hits, only the module needs replacing (~$55), not the whole unit.
-
Park circuit analysis - detects open ground, open neutral, and reverse polarity before power reaches your coach.
-
Emergency Power Off (EPO) with auto-restore - cuts power instantly on a fault, then restores automatically once conditions are stable for 90 seconds.
-
WiFi + Bluetooth monitoring - live voltage, amp draw, and fault alerts through the free Power Watchdog app. You can check conditions from inside the coach or remotely.
-
Remote on/off control - turn your RV’s power on or off from your phone.
-
Energy metering - tracks kWh usage, handy at parks that bill per kilowatt-hour.
-
LCD display - shows input voltage from the park and output voltage going to your RV side by side.
Do you need to upgrade if your old unit is working fine?
Not necessarily. The voltage boosting in the new unit works the same way as the old one. If your older Hughes is doing its job and you already have separate surge protection, there’s no urgent reason to replace it.
That said, if you’re buying new or you’ve been running a booster without surge protection, the Power Center is the obvious move. It replaces two separate products in one cleaner setup, and the price is actually less than buying an autoformer and a standalone Watchdog surge protector separately.
